Gum diseases appear over time and often start painlessly, so it is important to pay attention to the symptoms as well as visit your dentist regularly as they are best equipped at identifying the problem. Symptoms include swelling, redness and bleeding around the gums as well as loose teeth and potentially (in more advanced cases) visible puss around the gums and teeth.

Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease where pockets form between the teeth and the gum which fill with bacteria and pus. A gum treatment procedure is performed in an effort to save the teeth and the surrounding bone. This procedure is usually performed by a periodontist who has more experience performing this type of surgery.

In the procedure the gums are cut and pulled back and the periodontist cleans the affected area before stitching the gums back. Specific instructions will be given on cleaning the gums as they heal in order to prevent further infection.
