4 Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to Be Removed

Despite being a natural part of our bodies, wisdom teeth can cause a plethora of issues and concerns related to oral health. Below, our Ontario dental professionals discuss wisdom teeth and four signs that you may need to have these late erupting molars extracted.

Wisdom Teeth: What Are They?

For us humans, these wisdom teeth are the four teeth that erupt near the back of your mouth as a young adult. They usually appear when a person is in their late teens or early twenties, depending on the individual.

When do Wisdom Teeth Need to be Extracted?

While not everyone requires the removal of their wisdom teeth, these late-growing molars may potentially create various serious dental concerns among many people.

Wisdom teeth might erupt incorrectly creating a condition known as impacted teeth, meaning that they do not fully emerge from the gums. It is also possible that the jaw may not always have the space required to accommodate these new molars when they come in, resulting in crowding and misalignment of the teeth in the surrounding area.

If your wisdom teeth are causing (or have the potential to cause) any of these types of problems in your mouth, your dentist will more than likely recommend the immediate removal of these teeth before they can cause further concerns.

4 Signs That Your Wisdom Teeth Should be Removed

A problem with your wisdom teeth may manifest itself in the form of the following preliminary signs, which can indicate that you should contact your nearest Ontario dentists for an oral examination and to determine the appropriate treatment option.

Painful, Inflamed Gums

During the erupting process of your wisdom teeth, your gums may become swollen, red, and tender to the touch. If your wisdom teeth become infected during this process, you may need to have them extracted.

Sinus Issues

If you are experiencing unexplained sinus problems, it is possible that they are being caused by erupting wisdom teeth. Sinus pain, pressure, and congestion can occur as a result of issues with the wisdom teeth.

Experiencing Difficulty Eating

If you've started experiencing discomfort while eating, it's possible that your wisdom teeth are to blame. In addition to jaw and tooth pain, it is possible for food to become stuck between the gums and the erupting teeth, resulting in infection and pain.

Pain in Your Jaw and Teeth

Pain or discomfort in your jaw, as well as in your other teeth, may result from the pressure exerted by your wisdom teeth as they grow.

Preventing Dental Decay

Even if you don't have any problems with your wisdom teeth, such as impaction or crowding, your dentist may still recommend that you have them removed. This is due to the fact that they are located so far back in your mouth that it can be difficult to properly clean them, putting you at a higher risk for tooth decay.

If you are experiencing severe dental pain and may be in need of a dental extraction or other immediate treatment, please contact our Ontario dentists as soon as possible.
